BOY RACER

Art By The Sea Side – Bournemouth Arts Festival 2012

Boy Racer is a celebration of youth and the particularity of the seafront being a meeting point for groups and gangs of young people along the south coast. A customised car is provocatively parked, sitting as if a glacial erratic having been set down and looking slightly out of context. The car is heavily gilded, adorned with gold, revered as an icon. From inside the sound of a person (the artists son) playing on a drum kit can be heard, trying to beat out rhythms. The car rejoices in the exuberance of the customised blank and the subversive youth culture of the auto meet, its status is as a god to a transient group.
